Our goal is to prepare them to succeed in the less intrusive faculty advising environment. The measurable/assess-able outcomes we've established are:

- How to interpret a course number (department designation, class level, credit hours)
- How to "drop" [withdraw from] a class, impact of grade on GPA
- Grade forgiveness policy (classes retaken here can replace grade in GPA calculation)
- Main components of a bachelor's degree (gen ed, major, minor, special BA/BS requirements)

We give them quizzes after the initial summer/orientation appointment and again in the spring semester (they've met with us anywhere from 1-5 times since the summer). This year is our best year yet for data. Finally getting good response rates on the spring survey/quiz and the numbers imply they are actually obtaining the desired information during their first semester.Annehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17649461495242121352noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4563817038811314784.post-70261171340238701632012-03-06T11:26:41.545-06:002012-03-06T11:26:41.545-06:00As it turns out, we're revising our learning o...As it turns out, we're revising our learning outcomes for U/E students ahead of an anticipated policy change that will mandate major declaration by a specified credit hours. We're starting with some overarching goals that have to do with students making an informed choice about a major based on personal interests/skills and career goals. Some of that can lead to quantitative measures, like how many students took the SII or attended this program or that.

But we're also wrestling with the meat of Art's question, how do we know that the decision is "informed"? Asking them about their perceived comfort level will be an indirect measure, but a direct measure will be fairly challenging. One we're exploring is to see how many student change majors after the initial declaration--presumably an informed initial decision would lead to greater stability. But I think we'll also have to develop rubrics so that as we deliver the program, we're also evaluating how well students are mastering the material.Ned Muhovichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02511976876268016431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4563817038811314784.post-69008690752414694502012-02-17T09:28:46.753-06:002012-02-17T09:28:46.753-06:00I am really drawn to Mitchell, Levin, & Krumbo...I am really drawn to Mitchell, Levin, & Krumboltz (1999) and their Planned Happenstance Theory. In a world where circumstances are always changing, being armed with a degree (and all the skills that accompany one, as Anne points out) and prepared to transform "unplanned events into opportunities for learning," and "generate, recognize, and incorporate chance events into their career development" can leave students less stressed about major selection and more focused on how involvement and networking can benefit their career path.Kyle Bureshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13613175492735026311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4563817038811314784.post-40344734809700521662012-02-16T16:30:29.335-06:002012-02-16T16:30:29.335-06:00I struggle to address this every single day. I try...I struggle to address this every single day. I try to explain that finding a job or career is not just about subject knowledge but skills and abilities. Can you communicate? Can you interpret, analyze, and manipulate information? Can you take charge of a situation? Can you work well with others in small and large groups? Can you follow instructions? Can you be trusted to operate within specified guidelines and policies? These are the gains from an undergraduate degree in ANY discipline. This is why we have general education requirements.Annehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17649461495242121352noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4563817038811314784.post-60306970306113369512012-02-01T03:18:18.348-06:002012-02-01T03:18:18.348-06:00During reading of the post, it has been observed t...During reading of the post, it has been observed that you have lot of knowledge regarding subject matter. I love it because it allows me to post information in a timely manner. In addition to the timely updates and announcements I have created some pages that students can assess at any point like Major/Career Exploration, Academic Resources, How to Declare a Major, etc. I have also include a calendar of events so students know what programs are happening around campus.

What I like about the blog format is that I can put all of the information in one place that is easy for the students to access. Plus I don't have to recreate everything because I can easily link important websites to my blob. I also really like the blog format because I can easily track now many people are access the blog and what they are looking at the most.

To try and help students remember about the blog I send a weekly reminder with information on what had been post since last week.

I would be happy to talk about this further if anyone has any questions.

Jenni Kotowski
Division of General Studies
University of Illinois @ Urbana/Champaign
jkotowsk@illinois.eduJenni Kotowskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03952408230182045710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4563817038811314784.post-83309452262951252702011-09-13T10:06:34.826-05:002011-09-13T10:06:34.826-05:00Hey Kyle -

Awesome!

We've been encouraged to develop more technological "solutions" to some of the issues we face with undecided students. I've been looking into many different forums. Would you be willing to share information about how often the blog sites were visited, and how students interfaced with these??

Thanks, and I SO admire your initiative! :)Sara GR (granbs@mnsu.edu)http://www.mnsu.edu/fye/noreply@blogger.com
